8:00 pm

Part of a weekend premier of new work for five gongs, voice and percussion, putting to test the possibility of sound experience in a rock venue situation. This contrast from the previous two nights in a yoga studio and arts space in separate cities is interesting, but potentially more powerful considering the opportunity of a large PA system.

Meltwater Studios
1911 S Allis Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53207

7:00 pm

Event Details
Current and former Milwaukee Ballet dancers collaborate in an evening of live music and dance with experimental artists Jon Mueller (composer) and Dawn Springer (choreographer). The music in the performance was originally written and recorded in 2010 by Mueller for his record ‘The Whole’, released by Type Recordings in the UK. For this performance, it has been re-imagined for piano, percussion and voice by Mueller and David Utzinger, and this will be the premiere live performance of this material. Springer’s choreography set to Mueller’s composition was created for 3 female dancers — Ania Hidalgo, Rachel Malehorn, and Janel Meindersee. This project will mark Mueller and Springer’s 4th collaboration. Previous commissions have included two consecutive projects with the Eaux Claires Music and Arts Festival, as well as the 2017 Dance Series at Lawrence University and in Real Time at the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee. Their collaborations are meta-inquiries into live performance, asking how we know what is before us. Their work has been described as “mesmerizing” by Spin Magazine, and as an “inherently visceral experience” by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Foregrounding concepts of transparency, radical diversity and inclusion, Zachary Watkins, Raven Chacon, Sharmi Basu, Morgan Craft, Ava Mendoza, and The Living Earth Show present AFFIRMATIVE ACTION: an evening-length collaborative production.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION was conceived with Zachary James Watkins to interrogate the manner in which chamber music is created and consumed. Composed by five artists of color and performed by the two white cis men of The Living Earth Show, AFFIRMATIVE ACTION highlights the “lens of whiteness” through which the work of artists of color have to necessarily present their work. The project is built to activate the tradition of classical chamber music in order to craft a new, collaborative musical language.

Just as importantly, the collaborators view AFFIRMATIVE ACTION as a vehicle for bringing artists and audience together, reveling and relishing in “inclusion” as the production’s creative foundation. Though they have all engaged in decades of collaborative musicmaking, several of the composers will be writing their first “commissioned” piece of chamber music in this project. By presenting these composers’ work alongside the work of composers more familiar with the traditional chamber music ecosystem, AFFIRMATIVE ACTION provides a platform for artists of color to use chamber music (and the specific collaborative language of the medium) as a canvas to create vital artistic statements.

For the community at large, AFFIRMATIVE ACTION is designed to welcome audience members who have traditionally felt excluded from classical music spaces, providing a multimedia production integrating improvisation, electronic music, ambient music, rock music, theater, and performance art to present an inclusive artistic experience.

NORDRA LP now available

NORDRA (Monika Khot) "ST" debut album, single LP NOW AVAILABLE

You can order the LP here:

http://sige.bigcartel.com/product/nordra-s-t-lp

Debut album by Seattle's Nordra, aka Monika Khot. Desolate beat-scapes flecked with fleeting moments of beauty. Design by Nordra and SIGE, housed in letterpressed jackets by Stumptown Printers.  Edition of 300 copies, pressed on dried blood colored vinyl.

"...tracks plowed relentlessly with complex martial rhythms buttressed by engrossingly desolate guitar and trumpet drones. Others wafted like anomic threnodies for this damaged, damned age. This music is the future of pop, right fucking now; you just don't realize it yet." - The Stranger
