Marshall Trammell "Ebonics Native Land Acknowledgement #1 (ENLA #1)"

Pro Arts in partnership with AGENCY Oakland invites you to The LOOM, on August 21st, 2021, at 6:00PM for a public site-tuning event, entitled Ebonics Native Land Acknowledgement #1 (ENLA #1), performed by percussionist Marshall Trammell/Music Research Strategies.

Ebonics Native Land Acknowledgement #1 (ENLA #1) is an electro-acoustic, site-tuning event of the internal architecture of the 10,000 square feet AGENCY's space at the LOOM. The event is part of Trammell’s Black Amnesia and Indigenous Justice project series that began as his 2018-19 Intercultural Leadership Institute fellowship and his solo tour, Status Quo Is My Enemy.  Ebonics Native Land Acknowledgment series of public site-interventions in Oakland, performed by Marshall Trammell are meant to create a platform for new interpretations of the ethos of native land acknowledgements with the Artist at the center of community empowerment, knowledge production, and solidarity economics.

As part of Ebonics Native Land Acknowledgement #1 (ENLA #1) Marshall Trammell will lead a collective reading of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples , perform a percussion solo, and discuss the significance of his Black Amnesia and Indigenous Ebonic Native Land Acknowledgement projects, and the Pro Arts’ Performing Pro Arts COMMONS incubator that transgresses art, law, and economics to reframe the value of art and labor in the context of a sharing economy. Trammell will also lead a collective reading of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous which will become the foundation for the idiosyncratic, sound-based site-tuning event at AGENCY at The LOOM. It should further be noted that this project proposal is an interpretation of the visual score, Dispatch #2, conceived by Candace Hopkins (Taglish/Yukon) and Raven Chacon (Novajo) by Music Research Strategies. “Published in three parts — or ‘Dispatches’ as the artists declare — the work draws from Chacon and Hopkins’ reflections on the fight for cultural preservation and defense of Indigenous sovereignty at the Standing Rock Reservation Water Protector encampment in 2016.

Marshall Trammell: Music Research Strategies

Music Research Strategies Performing Political Education (Towards a Solidarity Economics Conduction System for Improvisers)

 @ 7:00pm
Events take place October 17, 24,  and 29 at 7pm
Music Research Strategies (percussionist Marshall Trammell) instigates social practice collaborations at sites of political opposition. Music Research Strategies began as a critical ethnographic framework bridging Trammell’s ongoing interests with improvising strategies, organizational improvisation and psychology, and street-level, social justice action. Music Research Strategies navigates the global economy as a touring musician performing research and political education nationally and internationally through a battery of modular, social science-based systems.
For his residency and series of events at Western Front, Trammell will undertake a collaboration and exchange with Vancouver artists who use percussion—including Eileen Kage and John Brennan—and present his research around music as a tool for collective organizing. Over the course of a two week residency with three events, Music Research Strategies will continue the Insurgent Learning Workshop (ILW) series focusing on “Solidarity Economics,” a participatory, improvised music workshop. The workshop serves as a public & collective process towards developing a new language through improvisation based on a general framework of ideas developed by the US Solidarity Economy Network.
This series of events will unfold over three evenings:
October 17, 7pm
Insurgent Learning Workshop: Solidarity (Cooperative) Economics Conduction System
Night one consists of an open rehearsal and workshop with Trammell and collaborators.
October 24, 7pm
Indexical Moment/um: Solidarity (Cooperative) Economics Conduction System
Night two consists of three “conductions” with a collaborative group and a solo performance.
October 29, 7pm
Social Impact Assessment: Music Research Strategies with John Brennan
Night three concludes the series with a talk by Trammell and a final performance with John Brennan.

The aim of this workshop is to help people understand and define their creative voice and vision. Through stories, meditation and discussion, points of individuality will be identified, creating a clearer path to make your work, whatever the discipline, more aligned with your identity and unique character.

Beginning with a talk, examples of finding one’s own voice within the chaos (and uniformity) of our lives will be shared. These ideas will then be allowed to distill within each person individually – an important process to help identify the path to move forward – during a quiet gong meditation using a variety of mid to large sized gongs. These deep tones provide a relaxing and conducive background for undistracted thought, concentration and focus within. After the mediation, the discussion will be opened to the room, sharing thoughts, experiences and questions, further inspiring and solidifying each person’s clarity on their own creative voice and how to put it to use within their work.)

Marshall Trammell

April 20th at Southern Exposure SF CA
Info: https://www.facebook.com/events/331718994147118/

Join us on Saturday, April 20, 4:00-7:00PM for a special performance and discussion. Mutual Aid Project – Marshall Trammell (percussion), Tracy Hui (banjo and electronics), Nick Obando (alto saxophone and electronics) – will be joined by solidarity economists, restorative justice and labor activists, and the general public to listen, translate and broaden practical applications of What Does A Harm Free Zone Sound Like? Part II in everyday practices.

This performance will be a continuation of What Does a Harm Free Zone Sound Like? Part I, but can be equally enjoyed even if you can't make it to the first event.

Performing Political Education: Fighting Formations are a series from the “Status Quo Is My Enemy” tour by Improvised Music and Social Practice artist Marshall Trammell, of Antidisciplinarity.net, (formerly Music Research Strategies). Inspired by the historical process of building Harm Free Zones ( sites of Transformative Justice), incarcerated former BPP/BLA Russell “Maroon” Shoatz’ ‘zine “Black Fighting Formations: Their Strengths, Weaknesses and Potentials,” and the tactical media of the Underground Railroad (UGRR), the tour serves to reinserts solidarity technologies of the UGRR and explore the labor-value of i/Improvisation as an everyday life, organizing tool in today's political landscape.

Experimental Love SIGE Records Valentine show

Upcoming SIGE records show at the Chapel in Seattle WA "Experimental Love" Featuring Daniel Menche, Marshall R. Trammell+Aaron Turner, Faith Coloccia as Mára, NORDRA and William Fowler Collins

February 14, 2019 | 7:300 PM | $5 – $15 donation at the door

“Experimental Love” – A collective exploration of drone, free improv, abstracted song and electroacoustic composition by SIGE Records artists Nordra, William Fowler Collins, Faith Coloccia, Daniel Menche, Marshall Trammell and Aaron Turner.

Nordra is the solo project of Zen Mother’s singer and guitarist Monika Khot, on label SIGE Records. Cinematic in nature, Nordra has utilized the trumpet to evoke an uncommon feeling of dread, along with sequenced beats, vocals, and guitar loops.

Originally from rural New England and now living in New Mexico, William Fowler Collins is an American composer, recording artist, and performer of dark minimalist music and drone music. Collins will perform material based on his new release, Field Music (SIGE). “Field Music isn’t a soundtrack for the bomb itself, but for the land that bore witness to its inception.” -THE WIRE

Faith Coloccia is an artist and composer/musician. She performs in Mamiffer, Mára and Barnett+Coloccia. She is the co-owner of SIGE records.

Daniel Menche is an experimental musician and multidisciplinary artist from Portland who has been performing and recording since 1989. He will be performing an electro-acoustic set of string drones reflecting the nature of his most ambient recordings on Sige Records — atmospheric and ominous drones that defy gravity.

Marshall Trammell is a percussionist & interdisciplinary cultural producer devoted to social issues. His unique training includes apprenticeships with improvising and folkloric masters, 20+ years as a creative music professional in the Bay Area, and MFA studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Integrated Electronic Arts. Currently, Marshall sits on the Executive Committee of the Merced County Arts Council in California’s San Joaquin Valley and spearheads an independent music festival.

Aaron Turner is a musician and artist known primarily for his participation in groups such as SUMAC, ISIS, Mamiffer and Old Man Gloom. His work has been informed by a lifetime involvement with metal/heavy music, often materializing in highly abstracted forms utilizing improvisation and longform composition. Turner is the founder of the Hydra Head Records label and co-founder of SIGE Records with partner Faith Coloccia. This event will mark his first collaboration with Marshall Trammell.

Black Spirituals video premiere!

Here is the new Black Spirituals(Zachary James Watkins and Marshall Trammell) video premiere for "Treatment" (Video by Faith Coloccia and Daniel Menche.

Video is here: Echoes and Dust website

Marshall Trammell: "What Faith Coloccia, with the support of Daniel Menche, have done is create a double, intertextual fold. Strobed and iterative, they have remapped the narrative of fugitivity as simultaneous multi-dimensionality, adapted from Dr. Willie Anku; performed by Black Spirituals, as an origami of emancipated soul. This is the flesh and blood of Black Spirituals. This is the flesh and blood of the present wave of magic and unapologetic liberation."

Event Details
Current and former Milwaukee Ballet dancers collaborate in an evening of live music and dance with experimental artists Jon Mueller (composer) and Dawn Springer (choreographer). The music in the performance was originally written and recorded in 2010 by Mueller for his record ‘The Whole’, released by Type Recordings in the UK. For this performance, it has been re-imagined for piano, percussion and voice by Mueller and David Utzinger, and this will be the premiere live performance of this material. Springer’s choreography set to Mueller’s composition was created for 3 female dancers — Ania Hidalgo, Rachel Malehorn, and Janel Meindersee. This project will mark Mueller and Springer’s 4th collaboration. Previous commissions have included two consecutive projects with the Eaux Claires Music and Arts Festival, as well as the 2017 Dance Series at Lawrence University and in Real Time at the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee. Their collaborations are meta-inquiries into live performance, asking how we know what is before us. Their work has been described as “mesmerizing” by Spin Magazine, and as an “inherently visceral experience” by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

BLACK SPIRITUALS PRESS

Here is the recent press for Black Spirituals' new record "Black Access/Black Axes" .

"Like the resonant African-American traditions that long precede them, the Black Spirituals are equal parts choreographed and improvisational, containing simultaneously measuredly deliberate and frenetically urgent sonicities. True to name, the Black Spirituals evoke and produce a Black spirituality in the sonorous tradition of Black flight calling us to follow the North Star and any and all other pathways to freedom. It’s the choreographed and synergistic spontaneity and improvisation with clear inspirations drawn from jazz traditions, indigenous African drumming, and anti/de-colonial musico-theological and ritualistic traditions across the Afro diaspora; and it’s an expression that constitutes the kind of musical fugitivity most organically and innately produced by Black Americans in our “post-emancipation” captive state. It’s a music for music’s sake, and it’s a feverish cathartic expression of freedom dreams with true liberatory capacity.

The Black Spirituals, like their musical forebears, are fugitive planners enacting, per Harney & Moten, “ruptural and enraptured” soundscapes and offering a space of refuge within which enlightenment can be understood and, thus, enacted.

But this is not music alone. The Black Spirituals are a transdisciplinary and genre transcendent epistemic framework that exists both in itself and in complement with other artists. Black Access Black Axes is a project expressing Black vernacularity as a solo-duetting avant-garde musical technology driven by clear need to contain and articulate both the world in which we live and the dire need to flee and imagine and create another. The album’s core are the drone-like meditative frequencies recalling an ever-present sounding alarm: a state of emergency, an alarm signaling the need for and actualization of Black escape, a Black articulation of futurity only accessible through distortions and conversing-dueling guitar and drum.

Though this is the last joint project with which Zachary James Watkins & Marshall Trammell will bless us, the beauty in their music is their dynamism together as well as apart. So/but before we continue to be blessed with their respective solo workings (made evident in this and all the group’s work), this is an invitation to revel in this deeply affective creation born out of their wellspring of love for Black people and our deservingness of freedom.

From my head to my DNA, I felt this. I hope you will, too." -Zoé Samudzi
